Summary: | The expansion of Elodea canadensis throughout Baikal lake since its first appearance in the late 1970s and quantitative estimates of production are reviewed. An apparent decline in E. canadensis development at Posolsky Sor between 1984 and 1985 could be due to typical interannual fluctuations in Baikal biomass. Rapid growth of E. canadensis under cover of Potamogeton perfoliatus achieved 100 per cent bottom cover and a mean phytomass of 1800-4260 g per m2 in the Khuzhir-Nugo and Shide bays where other higher water plants grew under cover of E. canadensis which reached heights of 1.0-1.5 m. In the Olkhonsky Gates and Maloye More straits E. canadensis covered 1189 hectares by 1986 with a phytomass of 3344 g per m2 (fresh weight). E. canadensis covered virtually the whole lake perimeter but distribution was limited by transparency; high resistance to freezing and toxic compounds was observed together with a metabolic capacity for treating sewage. |
