Description
Summary:The understanding of water flow and storage processes in the soil is extremely important once it provides means for an effective water resource planning and management within soil-crop-atmosphere system. Several agro hydrologic models are used for this purpose, irrespective of whether they are public or commercial, simple or complex. In the present paper, two public models - SWAP and HYDRUS 1D, widely utilized in onedimensional water flow simulations, were applied for quantifying the water balance under two significantly distinct agricultural scenarios. Based on the results, the models were then evaluated through comparisons with the observed groundwater levels and drainage through the bottom of the soil profile. The results showed good performance of both models, expressed by means of the adopted statistics. Additionally, the results provided by the two models concerning other variables not observed in the field were compared among themselves. Good adherence was found for moisture profiles as well as for the calculated evaporation values
