Summary:The cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Gennadius coexists with the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and together these pests affect many greenhouse and outdoor crops. Among T. vaporariorum predators there are two Mediterranean native mirid bugs, Dicyphus tamaninii Wagner and Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner. The present study aimed to examine the potential of D. tamaninii and M. caliginosus for biological control of B. tabaci when this species coexists with T. vaporariorum. Two aspects were studied: first, the B. tabaci developmental stages that are susceptible to predation by adults and nymphs of the mirid bugs, and second, whitefly consumption rates by mirid adults when nymphs of T. vaporariorum and B. tabaci are simultaneously available in different ratios.
