Summary: | A new approach to the use of mathematical optimization models in the design of wastewater treatment systems is proposed. Known as robust optimal design, this approach extended nonlinear optimization models to include first-order sensitivity-based measures of system robustness, defined as a system's ability to maintain a given level of performance even if the actual parameter values differed from the assumed values. Nonlinear optimization and system sensitivity analysis techniques were used to develop a solution procedure. The approach was capable of taking account both of uncertainty concerns and of conventional objectives related to cost and effluent quality. |
