Summary: | In commercial cranberry culture in New Jersey, a high water table was required, and the cranberry bogs were usually flooded from December to May for protection against frost and as a means of aquatic harvesting. Parathion was used as an insecticide, and a study was carried out at 2 sites (1 experimental and 1 control) on the possible contamination of the groundwater. In general, there was no evidence that parathion moved vertically from the surface to the groundwater. Where parathion residues were found in the soil, the highest concentrations were in the upper stratum. There was little risk of parathion pollution of groundwater from normal cranberry culture practices in this area. |
