The observed borealization trends were brought about by the prevalence of large scale monocultures based primarily on Picea abies and other types of spruce. These borealization processes are characterized by high rates of soil acidification, increased litter accumulation, lower levels of nutrient cycling, and changed forest climates. Increasing levels of borealization are known to decrease biodiversity. Conventional management approaches should be abandoned in favor of management policies that boost the stability of forest ecosystems and their biodiversity.
