Description
Summary:Ecological conditions were assessed in 102 lakes in New South Wales, Australia, during the summer of 1988-89. A range of geomorphic types was represented, roughly in proportion to their perceived relative abundance. The principal parameters studied were zooplankton, certain littoral invertebrates and physico-chemical characteristics. The most widespread problem was eutrophication, though in some cases this was a pattern of change occurring since European settlement. Other problems included eroded shorelines, sedimentation, decreased diversity where the mosquito fish Gambusia affinis had been introduced, and proliferation of introduced plants.
