Summary: | Over the three years 1987–1989, a large-scale survey of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) was carried out in a total of 300 trapping stations set up in 118 peatland sites throughout Wales, UK. Factors influencing the distribution of carabid beetles in Welsh peatland habitats were investigated using the ordination program DECORANA. The most important factors identified were nutrient status and saturation of the substrate, altitude and grazing by stock animals; a further significant factor, burning of the site, could not be investigated thoroughly because of insufficient data. Implications of the results in the conservation management of peatlands are discussed. |
