Summary:Hay harvesting and burning of birdsfoot trefoil were tested in northern Wisconsin as a potential cultural control for the trefoil seed chalcid, Bruchophagus platypterus (Walker). Cutting reduced infested seed from 13 to 6% in 1989, and from 23 to 3% in the 1990 trial. Seed yield decreased an average of 68% for all cutting treatments in 1989 but in 1990 only the latest two cutting treatments resulted in decreased yield. Below-average July precipitation may have reduced the seed yield when hay was harvested. In a separate, single trial, burning was tested for efficacy against the trefoil seed chalcid. Though burning reduced plant bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae), it was not effective against the trefoil seed chalcid.
