Summary:Two 1000 m2 ponds stocked with Oreochromis niloticus were used to study water column respiration (WCR) in dark BOD bottles for 2, 4 and 8 h intervals during a 22 h period. The mean WCR ranged between 0.39 mg per litre for 8 h nocturnal intervals to 0.62 mg per litre for 2 h diurnal intervals. It was significantly greater during the day than during the night with the lower incubation period giving a higher WCR than the 2 higher periods. At night, the length of the incubation period did not significantly influence WCR. These higher WCR were attributed to a greater availability of photosynthetic respiration substrate.
