Description
Summary:A series of aromatic copoly(ester)s containing conjugated double bonds was prepared from p‐phenylene bis(acrylic acid) (PPBA) with a mixture of methylhydroquinone (MHQ) and various hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of diphenylchlorophosphate (DPCP) and pyridine as a catalyst and solvent. The phase behavior of these polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal optical polarized microscopy. Under an optical polarized microscope all copoly(ester)s show a nematic thermotropic liquidcrystalline phase. Upon heating, these polymers undergo a photocrosslinking reaction characterized by IR and solubility analysis. This crosslinking reaction also takes place in the liquid‐crystalline phase with the retention of the nematic order in the final crosslinked solid. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
