Summary: | Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) return as adults from the ocean to undertake an anadromous spawning run up the river of origin. During the spawning migration, profound changes of the osmoregulatory mechanisms must take place. At the same time, the gonads mature, which is considered to cause an increased demand for calcium in the females. This can be met by an increased calcium mobilization from the environment and/or from the calcified tissues of the fish. It has been shown that scale resorption increases during the spawning migration of several salmonids. Although it is now generally accepted that scales are resorbed by osteoclasts, the activity of these cells during the spawning migration and sexual maturation has not been investigated. Thus, the aims of the present study were to investigate whether the scale resorption and subsequently the activity of scale osteoclasts increase, whether gill osmoregulatory mechanisms are affected, and whether plasma levels of GH, T sub(3), and T sub(4) change during the spawning migration. |
