Description
Summary:The influences of income and the spatial intensity of economic activity on concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere are analyzed. A U-shaped relationship was identified between income and atmospheric concentrations of this pollutant. An inverted U-shaped relation was found suitable for defining the link between the spatial intensity of economic activities and concentrations of SO sub(2) in the atmosphere. Findings from this program indicate that the spatial intensity of economic activities provides a greater impetus for the development and implementation of policies and technologies for reducing emissions of SO sub(2) than does income alone. This new understanding suggests that atmospheric levels of SO sub(2) in developing nations may decline faster than was originally determined in previous assessments.
