Summary: | In order to assess the nutrient status of Monroe lake (a shallow, eutrophic, subtropical lake in the St. Johns river basin), central Florida, a database for seasonal changes in water and sediment chemistry at the sediment-water interface was established. Various physico-chemical water quality parameters were determined at monthly intervals between May 1981 and June 1982 for samples from 16 stations. Nutrient levels showed no strong trends with mean total nitrogen and phosphorous levels for the study period of 1.82 and 0.21 mg per litre, respectively. Sediment organic carbon content ranged from 1-182g per Kg (dry weight), reflecting considerable spatial variability. Sediment nutrient levels showed high correlations with sediment carbon, although no correlations between water and sediment chemistry were observed. Temporal trends may have been concealed by hydrologic flushing of the St. Johns river into Monroe lake. Seasonal changes in electrical conductivity were also associated with this phenomenon. |
