Description
Summary:Analytical solutions are derived for the isothermal pseudoelastic response of a Shape memory alloy (SMA) thick-walled cylinder subjected to external pressure. The Tresca transformation criterion and linear hardening are used to describe the phase transformation. The different transformation stages of the cylinder at isothermal circumstances are first discussed. For each transformation stage, solutions for the stresses, volume fractions of martensite and transformation strains are given, respectively. The results show that, the external pressure can induce the martensitic phase transformation of the SMA thick-walled cylinder, while after the transformation happens, there is little effect on the phase transformation by the increasing external pressures. This work can provide a theoretical basis for future analysis on SMA cylinders. •An analytical solution is presented for SMA cylinder under external pressure.•Tresca criterion and linear hardening are used to describe the phase transformation.•The external pressure can induce martensitic phase transformation for SMA cylinder.•There is little effect by external pressure after the phase transformation happens.
