Summary: | Professional development (PD) is key to effective teaching in any subject and can be achieved through opportunities such as preservice and inservice days, national and regional conference attendance, and involvement in professional organizations. Physical education (PE) teachers can use PD to improve their curriculum and align it with state requirements and best practices, which are both frequently changing. Professional development opportunities were perceived by the teachers in this study to be nonexistent, not developmentally appropriate or PE specific, and poorly scheduled. One important strategy for PE teachers to receive effective PD is advocacy. Physical education teachers should advocate for the importance of PE-specific PD that focuses on best practices for students at various developmental levels and with a range of cognitive abilities. |
