Description
Summary:Data are presented on the concentrations of total aromatic hydrocarbons in sea water and sediment at 27 locations along the coast of Patagonia, Argentina in 1989. Contamination was greatest at or near sites with offshore facilities for loading petroleum products onto vessels for transhipment. High concentrations were also found in areas with minimal coastal development but where there were fishing activities. There was no direct relation between hydrocarbon concentrations in water and in sediment at the same site. Comparison with results reported from other countries indicated that the hydrocarbon concentrations found in coastal Patagonia were very variable and may be significant in the San Jorge gulf area.
