Summary: | Sub-scale system test results and the experiences gained during fabrication and testing can be extremely valuable for success with the full scale system. This publication focuses on the EM gun scaling relationships between the full and sub-scaled systems' field variables. Derivations of the scaling relationships presented are based upon the magnetic, thermal and momentum differential equations and a few basic EM gun equations. It is shown that the EM gun field variables of the two systems can be matched or scaled linearly (the peak values are scaled while their distribution characteristics are unchanged), if the scale factors of the gun dimensions, the gun current pulse, etc. are chosen properly. With the proposed linear scaling method a wide range of different scalings is possible. Cases of nonlinear scaling can be solved approximately in the average sense. The presented scaling relationships are applied to an example to demonstrate. |
