Description
Summary:This article demonstrates the effectiveness of continuous casting and examines the conditions under which the skin of a continuous-cast slab ruptures over its broad and narrow faces. The forces acting on the skin when the mold is oscillating upward and downward are determined along with the conditions for the formation of cracks that could lead to rupture of the skin when there certain deviations from the prescribed operating regime. Diagrams are presented to illustrate the bending of slabs, their pulling through rollers, and their deformation over their small radius with the formation of a longitudinal crack. A photograph is included to show an actual crack that led to the rupture of the skin of a slab.
