Liquid Crystals: Self-Organized Liquid-Crystalline Nanostructured Membranes for Water Treatment: Selective Permeation of Ions (Adv. Mater. 17/2012)

Description
Summary:A water-treatment membrane with ordered, 3D, ionic nanochannels showing high water permeability and ion selectivity is reported by M. Henmi, T. Kato, and co-workers . The membrane transports larger divalent sulfate ions effectively, while smaller monovalent anions such as chloride and bromide are highly rejected by the membrane. These nanochannels are fixed in the membrane by in-situ photopolymerization of a thermotropic liquid crystalline monomer, forming bicontinuous cubic structures.
