Summary: | The main cause of the electrode mass melting rate oscillations during vacuum arc remelting (VAR) of steels and alloys is shown to be the displacement of an arc into zones with different metallic vapor pressures. For the remelting process to be stabilized, the arc space length should be controlled as a function of the electrode melting rate and the shrinkage defects in cast electrodes should be removed by high-temperature gasostatic treatment. |
