Summary: | A nanocrystalline iron sample of non-uniform grain size distribution was nitrided at 500 degree C under gas atmosphere with gradually increased nitriding potential. Mixtures of alpha -Fe and gamma '-Fe4N phases were observed at a broad range of the nitriding potential. Unexpectedly, the mean size of the product's crystallites at small conversion degrees was much higher than the one observed initially for the substrate and gradually decreased with the advancement of the reaction. The observed behavior was explained by the reaction mechanism regarding the influence of the Gibbs-Thomson effect. |
