Description
Summary:We describe a fluorescence quenching method for determination of bismuth with tiron. The method is based on the reaction of tiron by bismuth(III) in acidic media. The influence of variables such as the pH, type of buffer, tiron concentration, reaction time and temperature were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescence quenching extent is proportional to the concentration of bismuth for Bi–tiron system at the range 0.13–2.09μgmL−1 and the detection limit is 0.05μgmL−1. The proposed sensor presented good repeatability, evaluated in terms of relative standard deviation (R.S.D.=±0.498%) for 11 replicates. This sensitive, rapid and accurate method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace bismuth(III) in water and hair samples and certified reference materials. •No previous paper report on use of fluorescence quenching for determination of Bi.•Fluorescence quenching of trion is a sensitive method for determination of Bi(III).•Under the optimum conditions the detection limit is very low (0.05μgmL−1).•The procedure is simple and safe and has high tolerance limit to interferences.
