Summary: | Malaysia's Kelantan state supports a wide range of forested lands, nature reserves, and protected natural regions. However, the state is also one of the poorest areas in the country, and as a result, these forested regions are under severe threat from human activities. These problems are compounded by the fact that the state government lacks sufficient funds and manpower to manage the protected lands effectively. Conservation efforts in Kelantan will prove ineffective until the local communities participate actively in the forest management process. A strategy for improving the relationship between local peoples, the state government, and the region's natural resources is proposed. The strategy would attempt to educate the public about the need for biodiversity and nature preserves. |
