Description
Summary:The following species records of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Co Kerry, in early spring, provide an interesting seasonal contrast to those collected during late summer in the same county. From 23 sample locations a total of 12 species were recorded. Typically 2 or 3 occurred at a site, but in one exceptional case seven species were found together in a stream no more than 30 cm wide. Larvae and pupae were collected from a variety of substrates; the former were generally preserved in ethanol. Each pupa was isolated in a small tube with some damp paper tissue. Adults that emerged successfully were preserved after their cuticle had hardened, together with the associated exuvial skin and cocoon. Records of occurrence in the present survey are compared with published distribution data for Ireland.
