Evidence of change in some rocky shore communities on the coast of Ghana

Description
Summary:Rocky shores on the coast of Ghana, which were originally described by Lawson (1956), Gauld & Buchanan (1959) and Bassindale (1961), have been re-surveyed. Communities of molluscs and macroalgae on shores with extensive exposures off rock were similar in 1992 to those described in the earlier surveys. There is, however, evidence of change on shores where low-lying areas of rock are subject to sand scouring and periodic burial beneath the sand. One site, in particular, Ningo, supported three species of molluscs only when it was originally surveyed but now has an extensive area of exposed rock which supports 19 molluse species. It is evident from the use of ordination techniques that rocky shores on the eastern part of the Ghanaian coast support different communities from those on the western part of the coast.
