Description
Summary:Methacrylonitrile (MeAN) is used in the preparation of plastics, elastomers, homo- and copolymers and coatings. Thousands of individuals are exposed to various nitriles including MeAN, during their manufacture, processing or disposal. A review of the scientific literature on MeAN reveals a lack of information concerning its reproductive toxicity. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential reproductive toxicity of MeAN in rats given the compound by gavage. The oral administration was chosen because trace amounts of untreated MeAN monomer may migrate into food and beverages that are packaged in containers made of MeAN copolymers.
