Description
Summary:Egg capsules of catsharks (Scyliorhinidae) and skates (Rajidae) are commonly found in temperate and tropical coastal waters of most oceans. Their identification, however, is difficult because there are few comparative studies on the differences among egg capsules of different species (even though photographs or illustrations have been published for some. Descriptions of egg capsules are necessary because unidentified capsules abound in many collections, and capsules may furnish information concerning the reproductive biology of many species. A good example of this is the egg capsule of the whale shark, found in the Gulf of Mexico in 1953, which provided clues as to its possible reproductive mode even though the question remained unresolved (probably ovoviviparous).
