Summary: | The study of the skeletal fish remains excavated from the Upper Miocene (Pannonian F) of Goetzendorf an der Leitha, in the Vienna Basin (Austria), leads one to recognize at least seven different genera of teleosts. The cyprinids are represented by the genera Scardinius, Rutilus, Palaeocarassius, Tinca and Barbus. Fragments of pectoral spines and a dentary belong to a silurid: Silurus. Finally, spines of unpaired fins and a lachrymal are indicative of at least one undetermined percoid. To date, Goetzendorf is the oldest known occurrence in Europe for the genera Scardinius and Silurus. This fish fauna bears witness to a calm lacustrine environment and to rather temperate climatic conditions. |
