Description
Summary:In this study, we have established the gene arrangement phylogeny of the O chromosome (Muller's E element) in three Drosophila species of the obscura group, based on their heat shock response. This approach complements phylogenetic analysis of inversions in Drosophila. Stress responses are becoming a powerful new phylogenetic tool, because they are amongst the most highly conserved and universally distributed biological mechanisms found in nature.
