Difference in the toxicity mechanism between ion and nanoparticle forms of silver in the mouse lung and in macrophages

Highlights • Toxicity of AgNPs was compared to that of Ag ions both in vitro and in vivo. • Ag ions are more cytotoxic and induced metallothioneins in macrophages. • AgNPs gradually dissolved and caused mild inflammation in the lung.
