Summary:Postmortem examination of three prisoners who had died during a hunger strike in Turkey in 2000 showed they had had haemorrhagic gastroenteropathy.2 We first suspected inflammatory bowel disease in our patient and suggested treatment with intravenous steroids. Oral supplementation with medium-chain triglycerides provides the colon with short-chain fatty acids in a similar way to the treatment of diversion colitis5 with short-chain fatty acid enemas.
