Description
Summary:Obesity is a fast growing health problem that is reaching epidemic proportions in many countries, including Saudi Arabia. In accordance with the recommendations of the Science and Technology National Policy in Saudi Arabia and based on the huge impact of obesity on the Saudi society, we established a comprehensive research center, the Obesity Research Center (ORC), to study the complex problem of obesity. The strategic objectives of the ORC are to execute a multidisciplinary research program on obesity syndrome, to support state-of-the art education and training on research for Saudis and to increase public awareness for obesity. We will present here the successful story of the ORC emphasizing its role in the implementation of an efficient health plan to combat obesity and its related diseases in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries. This would also provide a practical model for the foundation of similar centers in developing countries.
