Description
Summary:Sedimentation deposition and the resulting change in aquatic habitat due to the alteration of a natural river through the construction of locks and dams was investigated using 2 examples from the Upper Mississippi river system. In pool 19 on the Mississippi river, 58.4 per cent of its original volume had been filled with sediment since completion of the dam in 1913. A successional change from open water to submerged macrophyte beds, to emergent macrophyte beds to terrestrial area was taking place. Since 1939, Peoria lake on the Illinois river has had 68.1 per cent of the volume below normal pool level filled with sediment.
