Acute and chronic toxicity of endosulfan to two Australian cladocerans and their applicability in deriving water quality criteria

Summary: | The acute and chronic toxicity of the insecticide endosulfan to 2 Australian cladocerans, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Moinodaphnia macleayi was investigated. Exposure concentrations of endosulfan used were 50-1000 ug per litre in the 24 and 48-h acute toxicity tests and 10-160 ug per litre in the 14-d chronic toxicity test. The 24-h and 48-h EC50 (immobilization) values were 890 and 491 ug per litre for C. dubia, respectively, and 515 and 215 ug per litre for M. macleayi. The chronic 14-d EC50 (reproduction) value was 29 ug per litre to M. macleayi and 26 ug per litre for C. dubia. The corresponding 14-d EC50 values for survival were 112 and 66 ug per litre, respectively. Methods for deriving water quality guidelines are described. A concentration of 4 ng endosulfan per litre was recommended for an Australian water guideline. This was below the present Australian figure of 10 ng per litre. |
