Summary:In Teaching the Cult of Literature in the French Third Republic (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2004), Mortimer Martin Guiney argued that despite its apparent hostility to Catholic influence in schools, the Republican education system had its own pious morality and will for social order. Leon Sachs makes a contrasting argument, being, as he is, largely favourable towards the Republic and seeing its educational system as a proponent of free, critical thinking.
