Factors affecting light penetration in shallow lakes

Light conditions were determined in 6 lakes of the Danube delta (Baclanesti lake, Babina lake, Matita lake, Bogdaproste lake, Isac lake and Rosu lake). Light conditions were described as a function of 12 independent variables. The direct influence of the different factors on light extinction was: ph...

description Light conditions were determined in 6 lakes of the Danube delta (Baclanesti lake, Babina lake, Matita lake, Bogdaproste lake, Isac lake and Rosu lake). Light conditions were described as a function of 12 independent variables. The direct influence of the different factors on light extinction was: phytoplankton 64 per cent, detritus 11 per cent, zooplankton 7 per cent, dissolved organic matter 1.4 per cent and bacterioplankton 0.15 per cent. The indirect interference of wind, water turbulence and morphometrical parameters of the lake was demonstrated in the form of exponential and parabolic functions. The dynamics of detrital suspended particles in the water was principally accounted for by variation in the phytoplankton biomass (69 per cent) and water turbulence (24 per cent). The threshold for full water turbulence was 7-8 per cent for a critical wind fluctuation of 3.2-5.4 m per second and for depths of 1-3 m.
