Description
Summary:To determine whether the decline in the clam fishery in a coastal lagoon in southern Mexico gulf was caused by the oil-processing facilities around the lagoon, the concentrations of hydrocarbons in clams (Rangia cuneata) and lagoon sediments were determined once a year for 3 years. Data on the concentrations of aliphatic, aromatic and unresolved complex mixtures of hydrocarbons in the clams and sediment at each sampling site each year are tabulated. Although high hydrocarbon concentrations were found in the clams, and there was a marked increase in the hydrocarbon content of the sediments in the last year of the study, which was a cause for future concern, overfishing, rather than pollution, had caused the decline of the clam fishery.
