Summary: | Septic shock syndrome is a potentially fatal medical condition that is associated with elevated blood levels of low molecular weight proteins know as cytokines. The removal of cytokines from the blood by adsorption into silica was investigated. Results showed that increased concentrations of NaCl reduced cyotokine adsorption but did not completely eliminate absorption even at high concentrations, suggesting that adsorption was not entirely electrostatic in nature. |
