Description
Summary:The effect of enzyme pretreatment on ozone and chlorine-based bleaching of kraft-oxygen pulp from radiata pine was studied in the laboratory. Pretreatment conditions with Pulpzyme HA, a xylanolytic preparation from Novo-Nordisk a/s, were optimized separately for both ZED and (DC)ED bleaching. The presence of cellulase activity in the preparation caused significant cellulose degradation under some pretreatment conditions, particularly low pH and temperature. At optimum pretreatment conditions, bleaching effectiveness for both sequences was improved about 25% while bleaching selectivity was unaffected.
