Summary: | The processing and sintering of composites composed of WC/Co and 5-20 wt% yttria nanoparticles were investigated. The composite mixtures were mixed, formed and sintered at 1450 C under vacuum. The properties of these composites in terms of densification parameters, fracture toughness, and hardness were measured. The results showed an improvement in the properties of WC/Co with the addition of 5 wt%Y2O3. However, the addition of less or more than 5 wt% yttria nanoparticles had a negative effect on the properties. The fracture toughness of WC/Co-5 wt%Y2O3 showed a remarkable enhancement (about 13.611 MPa.m1/2) compared to the reported data of WC-6.5%Co composite (about 9-11 MPa.m1/2). The microstructure was correlated with the changes in these properties. |
