Description
Summary:The eutectic temperature and composition in the CuO-TiO2 pseudobinary system were experimentally determined in air using DTA, TGA and hot-stage microscopy. Samples of the new eutectic composition treated at different temperatures were characterised by XRD and XANES to identify the phases and to determine the Cu valence state, respectively. The results showed that the eutectic temperature in air was higher by 100 C (about 1000 C) for a Ti-richer composition (XTiO2 = 25mol%) than the one calculated in the literature. The reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ took place at about 1030 C. The existence of Cu2TiO3 and Cu3TiO4 was confirmed by XRD in the temperature range 1045-1200 C.
