Description
Summary:Conformational transitions of carrageenans, linear sulfated galactans from red algae, upon decreasing temperatures and/or increasing salt concentration are investigated. Static light scattering at 25 and 45 degree C was measured at angles between 30 and 100 degree . The Rayleigh ratio for benzene was taken and used at room temperature and measurements obtained at 45 degree C. All solutions were filtered, after which the cylindrical cell containing the solutions was immersed into a controlled toluene bath. The data were further analyzed according to the normal Zimm procedure. Refractive index increment determinations were carried out in conditions appropriate for light scattering experiments of ionic polysaccharides.
