Description
Summary:Trials compounds of 14 provenances with 317 open-pollinated families of Pinus maximinoi H.E. Moore have been established by Smurfit Carton de Colombia. From this genetic base, 32 trees were selected in 5-year-old trials and were established in two clonal seed orchards. These trees were free of foxtails which is a characteristics present in this species when planted in Colombia at altitudes of less than 2000 m. The selected trees averaged 22.2 cm in diameter at breast height (1.3 m) and 12.4 m in height relative to the trial means of 15.6 cm and 10.4 m, respectively. Further trials are planned with material collected from the southern range of the species in Honduras and Nicaragua.
