Formal Synthesis of the Human Rhinovirus 3C Protease Inhibitor (-)-Thysanone

A strategy based on Dötz benzannulation and an oxa-Pictet-Spengler reaction toward the formal synthesis of a human rhinovirus (HRV) 3C protease inhibitor, the pyranonaphthoquinone (-)-thysanone, is presented.
