Description
Summary:The present paper introduces a Markovian procedure for the simulation of wind speed and direction at a specific site. This method generates a Markov matrix from the available hourly site data for the wind direction changes. This matrix connects the present hourly mean wind direction to the next one after one hour. In this way a time series can be generated simulating the hourly wind direction changes. By using a Markov type probability matrix connecting the wind direction to wind speeds, a time series can be generated simulating the simultaneous hourly mean wind speeds. This coupled approach is tested using wind data from several sites of the Rodopi mountain range and the results obtained demonstrate close agreement between simulated and measured wind direction and speed values. For all cases tested the results obtained were more accurate in wind rose form than the ones obtained by simulating by independent wind speed and direction simulation.
