Description
Summary:Epidemiological studies have firmly linked infection with verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) with both haemorrhagic colitis and childhood haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Eukaryotic cells in both physiological and pathological circumstances, may undergo gene-controlled programmed cell death; apoptosis. We have looked further into the mode of cell death using Vero cells, which are exquisitely sensitive to the toxin. The following experiments show that apoptosis is the principal mode of cell killing by VT1.
