Summary:The authors identified 214 native Pacific salmon stocks whose persistence is in jeopardy: 101 at high risk of extinction, 58 at moderate risk of extinction, 54 of special concern, and 1 (Sacramento River winter chinook) listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and as endangered by California. These imperilled stocks are generally distributed throughout the four states, both in inland and coastal basins. All species are represented, but of particular note are declines in the southern (California and southern Oregon) portions of the ranges of coho, chum, and winter steelhead. We also identified 106 extinct populations, 67 of which occurred in the Columbia River Basin.
