Summary: | An analysis of the species richness and uses found on a diverse palm site in the Iturralde Province in western Bolivia is presented. The region typically supports a mixed variety of vegetation types, which range from tropical mountain forests to lowland forests and savannas. The altitude and climate of the region are detailed. Species richness for palms is the highest of anywhere in Bolivia, including 19 genera and 29 palm species. The region contains a mixture of the three primary phytogeographic elements in the region. In a region of some 4.5 ha, palms from the Andean, Amazonian, and Central Brazilian units can be found. The most common species is Iriartea deltoidea. Local people utilize roughly 55% of the palm species found in the region for construction, food, fibers, and other purposes. |
