Summary: | The fact that the world has multiple anthropologies has become increasingly recognized over the past decade. There is a greater awareness in the United States and Western Europe that anthropology is not only a Euro-American endeavor but also a global endeavor, and there is a growing understanding of the various kinds of anthropology practiced around the world. One sign of this is the growing number of publications discussing world anthropologies, with numerous books and articles in recent years that explore different aspects of global anthropologies, often to considerable discussion (see, to name just a few of these, Boskovic 2008; Restrepo and Escobar 2005; Ribeiro 2006; Ribeiro and Escobar 2006). A number of these contributions specifically relate to the situation of anthropology in East Asia (Kuwayama 1997, 2004a, 2004b; Yamashita et al. 2004b). A second sign of this is that many major Anglo-American anthropological publications have in the past few years added international anthropologists to their editorial boards; anthropologists not based in the United States or United Kingdom but, rather, from all around the world -- not least East Asia. A third sign of this is the growing awareness in the American Anthropological Association itself of global anthropology, as evidenced by the new World Anthropology section of the American Anthropologist for which I am writing this article.
